Beautiful isolated bay with interesting coastline
and its peninsulas, rocky, sandy bays!
Jacobsbaai came about because the Stefan Brothers, in trade between the Cape Town and West Coast farmers from the early 1800s onwards, forced many a farmer to take a 99-year lease on coastal-based farms by means of payment for a business transaction. Being astute business people, the Stefan Brothers could refuse landing rights to other traders wanting to trade on `their´ shores. Developers moved in when a 1990 Deeds Office search showed up an expiry on a lease. In line with strict architectural guidelines, cute-as-pin West Coast-style cottages today add their charm to what has been referred to as the "Namaqualand by the sea" due to the region´s indigenous flowers. Modern-day Jacobsbaai offers the visitor the perfect excuse to fish, dive, holiday, invest -even relocate!
Presented with 2 kilometers of sea frontage, who could ignore Jacobsbaai´s mussel, abalone, crayfish and fishing delights? It is easy to see why the Khoi leader Gonema had so actively resisted European invasion in the area. He had set down firm roots at Jacobsbaai and his plans were somewhat wrecked by their arrival. His namesake lives on at the holiday resort that today occupies Gonemanskraal.Peninsulas, rocky and sandy bays are yours to explore. From diving to angling, to dolphin and southern right whale watching. Or head out to sea on your kayak or boardsail. When the wanderlust sets in, the 17-kilometre hiking trail between Swartriet and Tietiesbaai is a good option to satisfy your curiosity of the equally gorgeous surrounding bays.
