PATERNOSTER INFORMATION CENTRE
Historic and peaceful fishing village bordering Cape Columbine Nature Reserve!
The perfect “off the beaten track” breakaway is Paternoster. Becoming well known as the St Tropez of South Africa, Paternoster remains a charming old fishermen’s village along the West Coast, just a casual one and a half hours’ drive North of Cape Town, where past and present meet.
In Latin Paternoster means “Our Father”. It derived its name from the prayers of ship-wrecked Portuguese sailors.
The people who live on this coast are hospitable, warm and nurturing of their religion and visitors always leave with fond memories. Enthusiasm and passion make the destinations, professional venues and the magnificent scenery unforgettable.
Life in Paternoster is still closely associated with the sea and the fishing industry. The boats still strike out every morning at dawn to net crayfish and snoek (and indigenous fish). Once the fishermen return, the trading starts and the visitor can choose the best catch of the day.
The Columbine Nature Reserve, with the well-known Tietiesbaai, offers the last manned lighthouse of South Africa where one can climb up to the top to view the bay and its surroundings.
Southern Right whales and dolphins also visit these waters ten months of the year. Visitors’ eyes can feast on the magnificent, colorful wildflower-carpet between July and October.
Nothing could be better than to sit on a terrace or comfortable spot along the 8 kilometer pristine unspoiled sandy beach with an unopened book and become at one with the rhythm of nature.
Activities offer kayaking, (kite)surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving (not for beginners), kite flying, hiking, whale-, dolphin-, seal- and penguin-watching, discovering a number of the 225 bird species of this area, visiting local art and craft work, painters and potteries, romantic sunsets and much more. The local restaurants and cafes offer excellent cuisine to please the taste buds and make your visit unforgettable.
